The 10 Problems Every Local Business Has With Loyalty (Solved)

Loyalty is not a feature problem. It is ten small business problems wearing one name. Here is each of them, and the fix.

Most local businesses do not have a loyalty problem. They have ten smaller problems that add up to one: customers who came once and never came back. This article takes each of those ten problems in turn and shows the fix, using tools already built into Lekka.

85% of South African adults belong to at least one loyalty programme (BrandMapp 2025/6). Belonging is easy. What keeps an owner up at night is different: the quiet Tuesday afternoon, the customer who was lovely and then vanished, the staff member you cannot leave alone with your systems, the Google listing with four reviews while the franchise up the road has four hundred.

Those are the real problems. Here they are, one at a time.

Problem 1: You market to everyone and bring back no one

The classic move when trade is slow is a message to the whole list. "We miss you! Come see us." It costs you goodwill with the regulars who were in yesterday, and it does nothing for the person who needed one more nudge.

The fix: message the customers who are one stamp away. Lekka sorts your customers into five groups automatically, based on what they have actually done: almost at a reward, reward ready, new members, haven't visited in 30 days, and everyone. Pick a group, write your message, and send it by email and in-app notification, with each person's name and referral link dropped in automatically.

You can preview exactly who will receive it before you send, and a fairness rule means no customer hears from you more than once in seven days. Your list stays worth being on.

A customer one stamp from a free coffee does not need convincing. They need reminding. That is the shortest distance between a message and someone walking through your door.

Available on Starter and up.

Problem 2: New customers give up before the first reward

A ten-stamp card looks fine to you. To a first-time customer, it is a long walk with nothing along the way. Most abandoned loyalty cards die between stamp two and stamp four, when the reward is still an abstraction.

The fix: milestone rewards along the way. Lekka lets you add up to five smaller rewards before the big one. A free cookie at four stamps. An upgrade to a large at seven. The free coffee at ten. The customer always sees the next milestone on their card, so they are never more than a couple of visits from something good happening.

Available on all plans.

Problem 3: Word of mouth is your best marketing, and you cannot see any of it

Every owner says the same thing: most new customers come from a friend. Almost no owner can name which friend, or thank them, or make it happen more often.

The fix: referral rewards with real fraud protection. Every customer gets a personal share link. When a friend joins through it and visits, both people get rewarded, and you decide what each side gets. You also choose when the reward lands: on the friend's first visit, when the friend earns their first full card, or a welcome reward at signup for the friend with the referrer paid only when the friend actually walks in. That last option exists so a made-up signup never pays anyone out.

Your regulars become a sales team you only pay on results.

Problem 4: You cannot be at the till every hour you are open

The moment you hire, you face a choice you should not have to make: share your account login with staff, or be the only person who can run the loyalty programme. One is a security risk. The other makes you the bottleneck in your own shop.

The fix: staff PINs instead of shared logins. Staff sign in at the till with their name and a four-digit PIN. No email address, no account to create. They can stamp, fix a wrong stamp, confirm redemptions and see the dashboard. They cannot see full customer contact details, export your list, open reports, send broadcasts, touch billing or change settings. And every stamp is attributed to whoever was signed in, so you can see who is actually stamping.

Included on Growth and Premium, at R25 a month per staff login. Your own login is free.

Problem 5: Happy customers, empty Google listing

Your Google rating decides whether a stranger tries you or the place next door. Yet your happiest customers, the ones in three times a week, have never left a review. Not because they refused. Because nobody asked at the right moment.

The fix: ask at the moment they are happiest. Add your Google listing once and Lekka asks on your behalf at the three moments a customer is most likely to say yes: on the screen right after they get a stamp, in the email confirming it, and on a printable review poster for your counter. The link opens straight into the star picker on their phone. No hunting for your business on Google Maps, which is where most review requests quietly die.

Problem 6: You have data, but no time and no analyst

Charts do not run a business. You do. And between the morning rush and the supplier order, nobody has an afternoon to work out what the redemption graph means.

The fix: reports that read themselves. Tap any chart in your insights and Lekka writes a short plain-language read of what it means and what to do next. Once a month, generate a full written performance report: busiest times, top customers, redemption trend, how long a customer takes to earn a reward, and what happens to that number if you drop your stamp target. Everything is compared against the previous period, and every figure is calculated from your actual data before a single word is written.

Available on Growth and up.

Problem 7: Your loyalty programme is invisible outside your four walls

The QR code by the till works for people already standing at the till. Online, where new customers are deciding where to go, your programme does not exist.

The fix: take the programme to where people scroll. Lekka gives you a claimed short link (lekkacard.co.za/yourbusiness) for your Instagram bio, a one-line widget that puts your live card on your own website in your colours, a website badge, and pre-written share captions for WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X and LinkedIn. Each caption is tagged, so you can see which channel actually brings people in.

Short links are free on every plan, including Free.

Problem 8: Generic tools dilute the brand you built

You have spent years earning trust in your name, your colours, your look. A loyalty card that screams someone else's brand undoes a little of that at the exact moment a customer is being loyal to you.

The fix: your brand on every surface. Upload your logo and set your colours: top bar, buttons, background, navigation, and a separate colour for the card itself. It applies everywhere your customers see you: the card in their pocket, your public listing, the widget on your site. Live preview while you pick, one-tap reset if you change your mind.

Included on Growth and Premium.

Problem 9: Loyalty cards get gamed

Every owner with a paper card has the same story. Self-stamping, shared cards, a suspiciously full card appearing out of nowhere. Generosity you did not choose to give.

The fix: stamps only when you are trading. Lekka knows your opening hours and refuses stamps outside them, which ends self-stamping from the car park on a Sunday. Each scan mints a one-time code valid for 30 seconds. And when real life is messier than the schedule (a private function, a pop-up, a late market) you flip Accept stamps anytime and the rule lifts, then switches itself back off so you cannot forget it open.

Available on all plans.

Problem 10: You do not have a marketing department

The honest version of most loyalty advice is "do more marketing", and the honest answer from most owners is "with whose hours?" Anything that relies on you remembering to do it will eventually not get done.

The fix: the programme runs itself. A weekly digest lands every Monday with your numbers and one practical tip. Alerts fire when someone joins or claims a reward, or weekly, or never, your call. Customers are sorted into bronze, silver and gold tiers daily. A review request goes to each customer 24 hours after their first ever reward, once per customer, ever. Your Google rating refreshes on your listing weekly. You set none of this up. It is on.

What this costs, in plain terms

Lekka is a flat monthly fee based on how many regulars you carry. Free to start with your first 50 customers, then R249, R499 and R999 a month as you grow. No VAT is added. Referrals, review tools and custom branding are included from Growth up, and staff logins are R25 a month each.

There is no cut of your sales, no per-transaction fee, and nothing changes at your till. Your card machine stays exactly where it is. Your loyalty programme belongs to you and moves with you.

Every paid vendor also contributes R10 a month to FoodForward SA, and your dashboard shows the meals your business has funded.
